Hiking & Climbing

NOTE: Adventure Center is closed for the winter season. We will re-open on April 1, 2012.

Whether heading out with a guide into the vast high-desert landscape or meandering along the resort grounds, you’ll find a Colorado hiking adventure to suit your interest and ability. While here, take a leisurely hike through Gateway Canyon’s Emerald Desert Ranch for spectacular back views of the impressive Palisade, or get your heart pumping with a climb to the top for a spectacular view of the world.

Expert-led Colorado hiking tours are offered as half and full-day journeys into the surrounding canyons and high desert Ponderosa Pine forests. Self-guided Colorado hiking experiences are charted on adventure maps for guests who prefer a solo trek in the wilderness and backcountry.

Hiking

Juanita Arch Hike (Intermediate)
A favorite among Gateway Canyons staff, this is a multi-sport trip beginning with a canoe trip across the Dolores River, providing access through Maverick Canyon to Juanita Arch, a beautiful natural bridge. This is rugged canyon country, with an out and back trip of about five miles. Guides promise cool surprises along the way.

  • 5-7 hours – $115 per guest

Gateway Canyon Hike
(Moderate – Intermediate)
Traveling through the canyon for which Gateway Canyons is named, you will learn cultural and historical background of the area during this hike. Using game trails as their path, most of the hike is in open desert canyon terrain, with gradual elevation gains.

  • 2-3 hours – $40 per guest

Lumsden Canyon Hike
(Easy to Moderate)
The easiest of our trails, this four mile out and back hike is accessed directly from behind the resort and can be self-guided. If you are interested in someone showing you the way, our staff will also review geology, flora and fauna while leading this hike. Perfect for all abilities.

  • 1-6 hours – Call for pricing

Cutler Rim Trail Hike
(Easy)
This fantastic and quick loop stays consistent with the elevations seen in the Cutler Formation or rock. It is an informal walk, where guides carry numerous materials to assist in teaching the cultural history and natural history of the area. Small elevation gain and is open to any level.

  • 1-2 hours – $25 per guest

Climbing

Colorado Rock Climbing
Climb to the top of the landmark Palisade rock formation or set a course in Unaweep Canyon. We will provide you with transportation, guidance and instruction on the route, climbing shoes, ropes and a harness. Our Colorado rock climbing destinations often require some hiking to access the route, sometimes through technical scree fields. The climbing itself consists of moderate pitches, of no more than 30 feet vertical. While our Colorado rock climbing program is not designed for the novice climber, we do offer alternate rock climbing excursions appropriate for a beginner. Just give us a call and we can find the perfect rock climbing spot for you.

  • Half Day – $95 per guest
  • 6-9 hours – $195 per person
  • Full Day (includes lunch) – $185 per guest

Colorado Rappelling
Lean back and enjoy the ride off the Dynamite Trail. Rappelling is a safe and wonderful team or family building exercise, providing an challenging and energizing experience for those interested in rock climbing but not the physical vigor of an ascent. Our staff will lead you in a 50-foot pitch rappel off of the Cutler Formation. Once you are down, guests hike back up the trail before returning to the resort.

  • Half Day – $95 per guest
