Fiery Furnace Hiking

The Fiery Furnace Guided Tour

One of the highlights of staying in a hotel near Arches National Park is hiking the Fiery Furnace. The natural rock labyrinth, composed of sandstone fins and canyons, is a popular attraction for visitors from March through October. Because the area contains fragile ecosystems and rare lifeforms, the only way to visit this natural wonder is by joining a ranger led tour or obtaining a hiking permit. Both methods require advance booking, so be sure to confirm your plans well ahead. The Gateway Canyons staff would be happy to assist you with any planning needs.

On the guided hike you’ll receive a primer on the local history and geology of the area before entering the Furnace. Lifting yourself over rocks, scrambling up boulders and squeezing through narrow spaces are all necessary skills on this tour, and as such, it’s restricted to moderately fit and able bodied people. You’ll be treated to large archways, vibrant colors of both plants and rocks and an eerie, otherworldly landscape.

Hiking Permits

For those who wish to visit the Fiery Furnace without a guide, a hiking permit must be purchased in person from the Visitor’s Center – there is no possibility of purchasing permits online or by phone. The permit can only be purchased up to 7 days in advance and must be used on a specific date. Because it’s very easy to get disoriented in the Furnace and GPS systems do not work well within its stone confines, the permit holder must be in possession of and show proficiency in the use of navigation equipment. If it’s your first visit, a ranger led tour is strongly advised.

What To Bring

Visitors are required to wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring at least one quart of water and a backpack to carry it in as the use of both hands is necessary. Extra layers of clothing and sunscreen are also recommended. As the hike is quite demanding and requires some strength and climbing skills, children under five years of age are not allowed to enter the Fiery Furnaces while those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
