Kayaking
The Dolores River, likened to the Grand Canyon for its beautiful desert setting along its lower elevations, is a true Colorado gem and the perfect river for kayakers of all skill levels. The outdoor professionals at Outpost Outfitters offer daily kayaking trips using sit-on-top tandem or single kayaks. Each trip begins with the fundamentals of paddling and river safety and runs two to three hours. Contact the Adventure Center for more information.

Horseback Riding at Summit School Riding Ranch
Located at the heart of the majestic Unaweep Canyon, the resort’s Summit School Riding Ranch is just the beginning of your authentic western horseback riding experience. The Summit School Riding Ranch offers beginner-riding instruction in the green pastures of the high-canyon floor. Guided tours to the base of the Uncompahgre Plateau are offered to treat resort guests to one of the west’s most beautiful and awe-inspiring horseback journeys. The Summit School Riding Ranch is now available to all Gateway Canyons Resort guests. Contact the Adventure Center to reserve your saddle.

Hiking
Whether hiking on guided tours into the vast western landscape or on a walk on the resort grounds, guests will have outdoor hiking adventures to suit their varied interests. Self-guided hiking experiences are charted on adventure maps for guests who want to go it alone in the wilderness and backcountry. Expert led tours are offered as half- and full-day journeys into the surrounding canyons and high desert Ponderosa Pine forests.

Mountain Biking
Gateway Canyons Resort operates mountain biking tours every morning. Enjoy thrilling descents and rides that test a variety of skill levels—all supported by our resort guides and adventure vehicles. Though the immediate area currently lacks the singletrack trails popular in Moab and Fruita, Gateway will soon become a mountain bikers’ mecca as the proposed world-class trail system leaps off the pages and into the dirt.
