When John S. Hendricks and his family first came to Gateway, Colorado in 1995 to build his family home here, he was deeply moved by the beauty and history of the area as well as by the spirit of the people who lived in this remote section of the country. Soon, Mr. Hendricks began to develop a vision—create a sustainable, scenic-based recreation economy designed to replace the area’s long-lost mining economy.
Many years and steps involving planning, community infrastructure and business development have made Gateway Canyons resort as you see it today, and much more is to follow. Through this effort, we have created many new permanent and seasonal jobs as well as bringing needed infrastructure such as the areas' first waste water treatment plant. With the opening of the Outpost General Store in 2005 fuel, food, supplies and a “community porch” were once again available to residents and tourists alike.
But Gateway Canyons is much more than economic development. In fact, the Hendricks family places such great value on this land and community that principle guidelines for human enjoyment of one of the planet’s most spectacular and treasured landscapes have been written by Mr. Hendricks himself and are carried out daily by the management and staff at Gateway Canyons. These principles also embody a continuing commitment by the Hendricks family and Gateway Canyons to assist in community projects and to support organizations that benefit the residents of Gateway and Mesa County, Colorado.
